Edgewood Plants 2018

Agapanthus africanus ‘Peter Pan’

A very attractive dwarf Lily of the Nile, Agapanthus ‘Peter Pan’ produces graceful rounded clusters of trumpet-shaped, light blue flowers, each petal with a darker mid-vein. They rise on stiff, upright stalks atop clumps of beautiful, evergreen, narrow and loose, strap-shaped leaves. Their foliage mounds remain attractive when the plants are not in bloom. Ideal for small gardens or containers!

Red Fescue

Much used & admired as an easy, low care, “lumpy lawn” this locally selected variety of “Creeping Red Fescue” boasts more drought tolerance, a silvery-bluer color & an earlier Winter start of new growth (rather than Spring.) Spreading by underground rhizomes, it makes highly attractive finely bladed clumps to 1’ tall. If left unmowed gives a dense, lush look. Drought tolerant & easy-going, it’s a great California native choice to cover a large area, replace a lawn, fill in a parking strip or used as erosion control for a hillside. Can be mowed. Evergreen & best appearance with some Summer water. Some shade tolerance.

English Lavender

Lavandula x Intermedia is a popular hybrid lavender combining the cold-hardiness of the English lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) and the heat tolerance of the Portuguese lavender (Lavandula latifolia), therefore providing an answer to the gardeners’ worldwide quest for a Provencal atmosphere in their gardens. These Lavender plants are usually taller than the English Lavender and grow in shrubby compact mounds up to 36 in. tall (90 cm). They are adorned with long, loose spikes of highly fragrant flowers, ranging from dark violet to white from early to late summer. The cultivars of this group of Lavenders tend to be more tolerant of acidic conditions.

The Battle Between Mobility and Conservation

In an earlier blog post I have tried to identify and address my own negativity –

The Negative feelings I have experienced in life; those lurking sensations that drag you down are so strange the way they can seem to rise up and strangle you with unpleasant thoughts about the world or other people, etc.

As another Spring begins its bloom, I am therefore particularly aware that there continue to be very real conflicts in the very most basic structures of our world.

In our modern world it is common, accepted and understood that things are complex and interwoven. When we think of issues – we tend to think of opinions, and a dialog of ideas – of coming to a common understanding & of accommodation for all of the parties and factors involved.

Rarely do our basic instincts play a role in all of this.

So what is happening when we see something and our instinct screams, “Ugly!”

All of our refined modern manors would tell us to give what this thing is a fair chance, to be free to be itself.

But what are the chances that our instinct is actually telling us something that is powerfully important.

––––––––––––

Today we have so many great things going on in the world, so many amazing opportunities to do things that are truly fantastic – And at the same time: we still have disease, violence, poverty and starvation; pollution now threatens one of the pillars of life itself – the climate.

So What – What are we suppose to do, what does this mean to me, how am I suppose to even begin to comprehend all of this?

–––––––––––––––

This is why I am proposing that we take a little leap, that is – a step, and carefully deconstruct our relationship between: The Big Picture and Our daily lives.

Clearly much of our worst social anxiety today stems from our traumatic relationship between fame, fortune and the regular business of life; the allocation of resources, going places and doing things, the enjoyment of life, health and safety, etc.

How peculiar it is that we have these radically differing paradigms about life.

In one you are suppose to go out in the world and become who you are meant to be. You seek out love and opportunity, you work hard and get ahead, you go to school and get an education – vital training, that provides the priceless gift of aptitude – thereby giving you the power to go out and make what you will of the world. It is a passport to undeniable success, in which you and everyone you know gets to excel in everything they do.

In the other – you are a natural born super-star who needs merely show up – at the club, the job interview or the job site, to be recognized as an incredible benefit to everyone around you. You have the super-ability to please everyone, even on the most intimate levels, with impunity. Your ideas flow like a river of gold falling from the skies on the joyously upturned faces of the adoring crowd assembled to witness the truth of your own awesomeness.

And the Ugly Truth is that when we all go to work the main thing happening is an insane clown posse of conflict between management and labor, ( see also Karl Marx ).

Work + Working

Robur Directum Scientia Est via Fortunae

Energy Directed by Science is the Highway to Prosperity

——————————————————————————

There is a way in which production for its own sake is completely natural – I mean it makes sense.

When you make something – then, there it is. It’s definable, obvious.

It is action, it is activity. It is more.

People can tap into the energy, they can experience it ~ and really this is what we are all after in life!

However, and this is a big HOWEVER – if this production is mis-purposed we have a problem.

The problem being – we have produced growth, activity, excitement around something that is wrong. Therefore this is leading people in the wrong direction. It’s like people waiting for at a station a train or bus does not actually stop at. As far as these birds actually catching the worm, it’s not going to happen.

—————————————————————————-

This seems to be precisely the case with the concept of private property in our society today.

People are like –

I will build something on my property -> people will think it’s awesome – QED – I will be awesome.
So clearly this is an ego based malfunction. One that typifies our cultural bias.

The issue is that in today’s world, we are so bound up by our own private worlds that the sheer number of private properties, not to mention their size and scale; severely out-weighs the numbers of people to actually participate in enjoying them.
This is such a simple equation -> and it runs right through the heart of all of our cultural hang-ups.

Take for example money – in order to fulfill my acts of personal aggrandizement, I am inherently required to hoard vast sums of money to pay for it. So, if there is only a finite amount of any resource, including money, this means that I must find ways of actively taking this money from others.
This dynamic typifies everything that is wrong with our society.
It is the dystopia that drives poverty, it is the fear that breeds greed.

—————————————————————————

All stemming from the simple desire to improve one’s life, one’s circumstance in life.

—————————————————————————

Well what can we do in regards to this?

To me the answer is in growing a life from the seed of the inner peace we all know it starts with.

World peace begins with inner peace.
What is reflected on the outer is merely a mirror
of what is on the inner.
Trying to change the world without working to change consciousness
is like trying to change the image in a mirror
without changing the object
that is being reflected.
The physical environment and circumstances we experience,
are merely a reflection of our consciousness.
Our consciousness is created by our thoughts — the true creative force.
To change our consciousness we must transform all our limiting thoughts.

So this is where I am today.

This the continual challenge, AKA opportunity: ————>>>

  • Can I find ways to interact with other people in my community that are mutually beneficial? – On an ongoing basis?
  • What would this look like?
  • What would it feel like?

On Negativity, Cell Phones & Friendship

In some ways I feel like one of the luckiest people, but in other ways my life has seen some struggle.

One of the ways I feel incredibly lucky is in the crew of close friends I have had over the years, throughout the differing phases of my development.

___________________________________
My intention with this post is to draft an explanation as to the role that negativity has played, and continues to play I my life, thoughts and conversations.

I offer this to all of my friends past and present, with the hope that it can help you all understand this aspect of my personality.

__________________________________

As I look about me in the world, there are things that I dearly love and that excite me, thrill me, intrigue me and that I want to be a part of. There are also things that I understand, that seem cool or important or in some other way real, tangible aspects of life & times.

However, there are, sadly some things that one sees or hears about that seem to fall outside of these parameters, and that is what this post is about

Some of these things are, like, unfortunate things, short comings, hang-ups, draw-backs, etc. These things we learn to live with; These are the Brakes, as the saying goes.

What I would like to discuss here are the things that are going on not because they are some sort of problem or issue in an otherwise OK thing, but rather these things are the result of an initial primary misunderstanding. In other words, these things are not stemming from some sort of inherited wrinkle in the face of a standard practice of life dealing, AKA survival strategy/system.

No, these are things that in and of themselves represent a mistake. They are mistaken steps.

______________________

Its like there is some sort of panic room where these babies breed – and somehow the rest of us are like out here going, “Gee, I wish life didn’t suck sometimes so much.”

Well you know, here’s the funny thing – the more I live, the more I’m like, “You know what?, this stuff is a joke!” The only reason we have to deal with it is because people put up with it in the first place.

And here is where the Negativity comes in –

Isn’t negativity basically the most basic form of non-violent protest. You know, this is me saying, “No!”

________________________

So I guess here’s the real issue/deal here:

How can you be positive about being negative?

You know I’m looking back here going, Awgh gee, all these amazing, great, incredible people I have known who have touch my life, and all I can think about is all of the negative stuff I have said to them; not about them, mind you; just the negative statements I have made about the world as part of our conversations, when I have been with them –

and – that are still part of my conversations today.

Currently, the thing I have been making negative statements about is the marketing of “Smart Phones”. I have been telling people when I talk to them, as part of a mutual dialog that is being held about the world around us, life & times, etc., that I think that the massive amount of advertising of Smart Phones that is currently ongoing, represents a liability, or has implicit negative consequences.

So why do I feel this way?

Here is my confession:

I honestly think that it is a fact that our culture has been Out of Balance, as is implied by the title of the epic film Koyaanisqatsi, 1982, ( Time lapse footage, directed by Godfrey Reggio, music by Philip Glass.) The film’s title is a Hopi Indian word meaning: crazy life, life in turmoil, life out of balance, life disintegrating, a state of life that calls for another way of living.

And what I am trying to say here is that, I will not sit by and let this crazy life be reborn in another generation of fools.

_________________________

OK to get off topic here and be positive; information technology in principle is totally cool, like awesome. We have every reason to believe that we have reached a point where we can turn the corner, stem the tide, on chaos and confusion. People everywhere should be able to access what they need to know to do what they do almost instantaneously, etc.

This is the promise.

_________________________

How sad is it that this sweet promise is followed so closely by corruption, and the patented insanity of Greed?

The marketing of cell phones today, I believe goes too far and is causing us harm. It does this in the sense that it is giving people The Wrong Idea. It is causing people to put the importance of cell phones Out of Balance in importance in their minds. While this is not totally critical for adults, who generally will know better, this sort of false promise has truly terrible consequences for our youth. Quite obviously our society is today suffering, and in some ways quite badly, from mis-placed/directed priorities.

We literally cannot afford to have our consciousnesses artificially influenced in such a way that we end up with a collective misunderstanding of the way life works, ie what is truly important in life.

In other words – there is no possible way for a Smart Phone to be more important that a true friendship, etc.

Every second that we allow this message to be propagated is a moment someone has the chance to become lost in it and to get The Wrong Idea about things.

Unfortunately, the makers of these messages are still being driven, at some level, by primal fear and the insecurity it breeds.

We as the public are so surrounded by these packs of lies, we are subsumed in a sea of false objectives and fake promises.

My ex-wife calls it: Dianetics, as slang way of referring to the way life becomes corrupted through misunderstanding, driven by fear and hate, etc.

Somewhere, right now today someone is teaching their child to operate is a cloud of deceit and insecurity.

Because they truly believe that the only way to get ahead is too get over on everyone, and everything, else.

How can we continue to live like this.

How can we continue to accept that someone will feel superior and someone – inferior.

This is all wrong.

_____________________________

The more I live the clearer this becomes.

I now know this is what I have been fighting against for my entire young life; this is what was holding me down, this is what was the problem – all around us, in every town, in all of our cities.
Surely, as Martin Luther King preached – This Must Be Defeated ( finally and permanently, discredited and abandoned – Haile Selassie I ).

These sentiments have defined my life, as I write them today I can honestly say that I have held them, and honored them throughout my adult life.

_____________________________

Therefore, the positive thing that we must see in negativity, is like seeing the positive in losing.

This is precisely the challenge that our society faces. We must be strong enough, mature enough, insightful enough, to realize, to see, to understand, that it is this side of human nature that we must lose.

We must now leave it behind.

We must cease our addiction to it; and the perverse fruit it bears.

_____________________________

And what is even more Positive is that – WE CAN DO THIS!

How incredible is it to think that – in order stop another cycle of this disease all we have to do is stop people from selling it; to stop ourselves from thinking it, and so from buying into it.

Let us take it off our air waves.

Let us revel in our ability to produce an enormous volume of positive celebrations of life itself, real life; the actual lives we are living. ( & not the worlds into which fear is driving us.)

Let us live and breathe the truth that this is where we must rest – Let us have the power to hold all of our relationships in this spirit, be they our Boss or our Employee, Father or Mother, Boyfriend or Girlfriend, Older or Younger.

_________________________

So that’s that –

In conclusion, it is not OK to sit by and let things occur that are actively generating a problem.

By speaking up, in this case against the thing we disagree with, can we not see that what’s really going on here is powerful.

This is the opposite of defeat. This is taking command; it is asserting control.

I do this not to be mean, or for my own selfish interest. I do this because in this way I can, everyone of us can, take the power away from what we are against.

Therefore I will say this – I must ask anyone who is reading this, anyone who knows me – trust me; do you trust me?

Do you believe, do you know in your heart, that the people you talk to, the people you share your life with, are looking out for you. Are they feeding the best of you? Are they training you away from your problems?

Do you keep the sacred place where these transactions occur safe?

I pledge to use this negativity with the utmost conscientiousness; to arrest failure, to stop waste and to redirect energy from problems to solutions.

This is all I have ever tried for.

Furthermore this is all that this can do, where I was wrong, where I was in excess, then the tide has run against me.

In other words, it’s not that Smart Phones are in and of themselves the problem, quite the contrary; rather it is how we allow our perceptions to be influenced that is the question.

This is what we can do, can  we not? We can have a modern world that is not out of balance, a world in which Old and more so: Ancient, things share equal value in our minds, with the newest of things. In which technology serves as much as a tool as does money, which after all is just that: a financial tool.

Geeks In Line

Today I was reading in the magazine Vanity Fair about the Twitter inventor – Jack Dorsey and the way ( with over 300 million in the Bank ) he wants to be mayor of New York City; although he currently lives in San Francisco; I felt as though I were reading some sort of New Age Vogon Poetry, however this new form of prose had the age old result of causing my gut to try and leap-up and strangle my own brain, to save itself from how truly awful it all was.

With the rise the geek, the nerd, to ruler of the universe in our bran new Information Age; we seem to be experiencing some technical, no make that – mental, issues.

We have succeeded in what the Greeks put forward as the ultimate question, and Plato and Socrates failed so spectacularly tragically to do; that is for the mind to triumph over matter. Or has it?

While no thinking person would argue against the brilliance of being able to communicate and have access to information the way we do, how does it help us to have someone, who doesn’t even live in a city, claim to have a stake in how it should be run, just because that’s what he thinks?

Un-employment is high, people are being shot in the street, there are considered to be more conflicts around the globe today than ever. Why should I feel good about how many people are following someone on Twitter.

I’m sorry it all just seems way too far-fetched, I mean really…

It think it clearly calls for some sort of inter-national cap on the rampant intellectualism that is polluting our minds. I mean can anyone get anything done in this day in age without tripping over someone else’s big idea? Are there any simple pleasures left, unadulterated by conceptualization, unmarred by spin, un-liked and not commented upon?

By this point anyone who knows me will see just how close to home this is for me. I am like the quintessential big-thinker. Heck, I was blabbing about high speed rail when Obama was just a gleam in Illinois’ eye.

I guess it’s Back to the Future all over again.

Back before we could reach out and touch someone, via text, talk and however many bloody G’s, the way people stayed in touch was by walking down the sidewalk in and to their neighborhood spot, locale, etc. No this is not a neo-Luddite rant, what I am suggesting is this:

Sharing the sidewalk, coffee-shop, bar, office space, etc. requires common decency. Back in the day – this basic fact was enforced by the physical laws of the universe. In order to get things done people had to work hand in hand. In our brave new virtual cyber world, where buildings, communities, even money itself, exist as digital representations of reality; we have yet to learn how we conduct ourselves as regular folk.

How do we help the old lady across the street?
and more to the point – How do the Jocks keep the Geeks in line anymore?
